Kiev Chronicles

As an American by choice and a Ukrainian by birth, I was following the events that unfolded in the winter of 2013-2014 in Ukraine with both enormous angst and great hope in my heart. Here in California I felt as if I was living the history of my homeland through the eyes (and lenses) of brave video and photojournalists on the ground. These are the days of January - February 2014 in Kiev - as seen from 7000 miles away. The following paintings were completed over the period of a couple of weeks as I watched my generation fight for the future of their country.

Serhiy Nigoyan, 20 years old, an Armenian refugee in Ukraine and the first protester to be killed by government forces, January 22, 2014
